The American Snowbell Tree (Styrax americanus) is a native deciduous small tree or shrub that produces lovely, slightly fragrant, white, bell-shaped flowers that drip from strongly horizontal side branches with dark green foliage in early summer. After flowering has completed, hairy fruits emerge. American Snowbell does not sucker from the roots.
Uses: As a flowering small tree or shrub as a specimen in wet areas of the landscape in a woodland garden, or in small groups as a backdrop to a border or for screening. Plant near a patio and enjoy the fragrant blooms.
Plant in full sun to partial shade, in acidic, organically rich, medium to wet soils with reasonable soil drainage. Performs well in moist sandy loams. Prune as needed in winter to shape. Propagate by seed or cuttings. Does not prefer tight groupings with other plants.
